SPECIAL MOVES

Mighty Spark

:joystick-down: :joystick-down-right: :joystick-right: :plus: :attack-button: (Air Ok)

:attack-light: – 1 Hit – 80,000 dmg (3 Hits - 90.700 dmg up close)
Ground: Startup 15/Active 19/ Recovery 12/ Adv.on Hit +8/ Adv.on Guard +5/ Meter 1056
Air: Startup 13/Active 19/ Recovery 9/ Adv.on Hit +4/ Adv.on Guard -4/ Meter 1056

Very fast and does ok damage. Still has some start up time though.

:attack-medium: – 3 Hits - 108,300 dmg ( 7 Hits - 123,000 dmg up close)
Ground: Startup 23/Active 32/ Recovery 3/ Adv.on Hit +16/ Adv.on Guard +12/ Meter 1792
Air: Startup 21/Active 32/ Recovery 4/ Adv.on Hit +8/ Adv.on Guard -2/ Meter 1792

Slightly slower start up time but does more damage than L version. Decent anti air attack againts frontal assults and leaves him at a frame advantage except when blocked with the air version.

:attack-hard: – 5 Hits – 143,200 dmg (11 Hits - 154,000 dmg up close)
Ground: Startup 30/Active 45/ Recovery 0/ Adv.on Hit +18/ Adv.on Guard +14/ Meter 2648
Air: Startup 28/Active 45/ Recovery 0/ Adv.on Hit +13/ Adv.on Guard +1/ Meter 2648

Has a slowest start up time than the other versions but does the most damage especially up close. The initial spark last 30 frames and has a huge hit box making it difficult to jump or rush in. This leaves Thor at a frame advantage either way.

Mighty Smash

:joystick-right: :joystick-down: :joystick-down-right: :plus: :attack-button:

:attack-light: - 2 Hits - 133k dmg - Hard Knockdown -
Startup 12/Active 6(17)3/ Recovery 28/ Adv.on Hit ---/ Adv.on Guard -4

Fast and causes a knock down on the second hit. You can hyper cancel into Mighty Thunder for extra damage or call an OTG assist fast enough to knock them back up. This move travels a short distance.

:attack-medium: - 2 Hits - 160k dmg - Ground Bounce -
Startup 12/Active 6(17)3/ Recovery 33/ Adv.on Hit ---/ Adv.on Guard-9

Causes a ground bounce that lifts them off the ground. You can combo after this or hyper cancel into Mighty Thunder or Mighty Tornado. This move travels mid-distance across the screen and ground bounces on the second hit.

:attack-hard: - 3 Hits - 203,700 dmg (Charged: 226, 100) - Hits OTG - Hold :attack-hard: to charge.
instant: 13/Active 6(19)3 / Recovery 13 / Adv.on Hit +20/ Adv.on Guard +9 Meter 1600
Charged: 33/Active (6)8-12 / Recovery 9 / Adv.on Hit +20/ Adv.on Guard -8 Meter 1120

This move recieved a signficant buff. The charge time has been reduced by about 5 frames making it easier to follow up after an air combo. The advatage on hit has also been increased to allow Thor to follow up accordintly. The fully charged on is still unsafe when blocked but it now gains 1 hit of super armor at frames 32 to 48 adding to Thors threat and presence.

Mighty Strike

:joystick-left: :joystick-down: :joystick-down-left: :plus: :attack-button: (Air Ok, Hold On) Nullifies projectiles

:attack-light: - 2~3 Hits – 133k dmg (3 Hits – 175,900 dmg If Fully charged)
Startup 20~41/Active 11~11~(1) 11/ Recovery 35 ~ 22/ Adv.on Hit -10/ Adv.on Guard -18 ~ -7

(AIR) - 2~3 Hits – 133k dmg (3 Hits – 175,900 dmg If Fully charged)
Startup 20~41/Active 11~11~(1) 11/ Recovery 15 ~ 1/ Adv.on Hit -/ Adv.on Guard -5 ~ +12

Both on the ground and in the air Thor goes straight horizontally across the screen.

:attack-medium: - 2~3 Hits – 133,00 dmg (3 Hits – 175,900 dmg If Fully charged)
Startup 20~41/Active 11~11~(1) 11/ Recovery 23 ~ 10/ Adv.on Hit +2/ Adv.on Guard -6 ~ +5

(AIR) - 2~3 Hits – 133k dmg (3 Hits – 175,900 dmg If Fully charged)
Startup 20~41/Active 11~11~(1) 11/ Recovery 15 ~ 1/ Adv.on Hit -/ Adv.on Guard +13 ~ +13

On the ground it goes at a 45 degree angle upwards. In the Air he charges towards at a 45 degree angle downward.

:attack-hard: - 2~3 Hits – 133k dmg (3 Hits – 175,900 dmg If Fully charged)
Startup 20~41/Active 11~11~(1) 11/ Recovery 23 ~ 10/ Adv.on Hit +2/ Adv.on Guard -8 ~ +-7

(AIR) - 2~3 Hits – 133k dmg (3 Hits – 175,900 dmg If Fully charged)
Startup 20~41/Active 11~11~(1) 11/ Recovery 15 ~ 1/ Adv.on Hit -/ Adv.on Guard +13 ~ +13

On the ground, Thor will travel straight up while the air version will travel straight down.

Mighty Hurricane

:joystick-right: :joystick-down-right: :joystick-down: :joystick-down-left: :joystick-left: :plus: :attack-button: (Must be close)

:attack-light: - 1 Hit – 130,000 dmg
Startup 5/Active 1/ Recovery 40/ Adv.on Hit -/ Adv.on Guard -

Basically you sacrifice speed for range. It’s a bit slower but reaches the farthest.

:attack-medium: - 1 Hit – 150,000 dmg
Startup 3/Active 1/ Recovery 42/ Adv.on Hit -/ Adv.on Guard -

About a good range and speed.

:attack-hard: - 1 Hit – 180,000 dmg
Startup 1/Active 2/ Recovery 43/ Adv.on Hit -/ Adv.on Guard -

fastest version but range is short.

Mighty Speech

:joystick-down: :joystick-down: :plus: :attack-hard: (Hold down)

Startup 18/Active -/ Recovery 22/ Adv.on Hit -/ Adv.on Guard -

This move Builds about 1 hyper bar every 5 seconds and is Hyper cancelable and X-Factor cancelable. You can also cancel into this from Mighty Spark, Mighty Smash, or the Mighty Strike as long as you are on the ground. Note this move has a slow start up and recovery so don't abuse it.

Flight

:joystick-down: :joystick-down-left: :joystick-left: :exchange: (Air Ok)
Startup 30/Active -/ Recovery -/ Adv.on Hit -/ Adv.on Guard -

Like most characters Thor is able to fly for a short period of time. if performed on ground or normal jump, Thor may call assist for the duration of his flight. You can cancel flight by entering the command again or hitting :exchange: , :attack-hard: or performing Mighty Strike

HYPER COMBOS

Mighty Thunder - 4 Hits - 383,700 dmg - OTG - Requires Level 1 Hyper bar
Startup 24+14/Active 40/ Recovery 63/ Adv.on Hit -/ Adv.on Guard -72

:joystick-right: :joystick-down: :joystick-down-right: :plus: :attack-button-2x:

Thor raises his hammer, Mjolnir, and strikes the ground causing a shockwave like attack that sends the opponent flying across the screen. This is his most damaging Hyper combo and is good in combos that knock the opponent down close to Thor or when the opponent is floating helplessly in the air during a long recovery.

The problem with this move however is that it has a reletivly slow start up and should'nt be used in retaliation againts attacks. But the most notable problem with Mighty Thunder is that it does not push back on block…at all. It does’nt even cause enough block stun to keep the opponent at bay which means they will recover almost right away and have time to retaliate accordingly. This move should be uses as a guaranteed combo ender, typically when the opponent is knocked to the ground close to Thor and you want to add more damage.

Mighty Tornado - 15 Hits - 321,600 dmg - Air Ok - Level 1 Hyper bar
Startup 20+2/Active 85/ Recovery 58/ Adv.on Hit -/ Adv.on Guard -35

:joystick-down: :joystick-down-right: :joystick-right: :plus: :attack-button-2x:

Thor holds his Hammer high and surrounds himself with wind and thunder. This is Thor’s primary Hyper combo ender of choice. It has a large hit box which seems to be bigger at the top and expands slightly. If done on the ground it knocks the opponent to the ground slowly allowing you to take the time to set up DHC opportunities. It can also be done in the air but the opponent will recover in midair after Thor recovers

The downside to this move is that it has a slow recovery and you can only X-Factor either early or late into this combo since he is slightly floating above the ground.

Mighty Punish - 2 Hits - 310,000 dmg (Must be close) - Level 1 Hyper bar
Startup 4+0/Active 1/ Recovery 23/ Adv.on Hit -/ Adv.on Guard -

:joystick-right: :joystick-down-right: :joystick-down: :joystick-down-left: :joystick-left: :plus: :attack-button-2x:

Thor grabs his foe and tosses him and his hammer to the sky which turns around and slams them back down doing decent damage. As mentioned above, this can be Kara-canceled just like Mighty Tornado. Unlike other hyper grabs like Haggar and Tron’s Hyper grab which are both level 3, Mighty Punish invincibility frames don't start until 3 frames after start up so it's possible for it to be stuffed in most situations.

Normally the opponent is knocked flat to the ground, however if you perform a DCH immediately after the Hyper Hits, it will put the opponent into a spinning ‘capture’ state in the air allowing you to continue the combo with your partners Hyper Combo. If your partner has a Hyper Combo that OTGs', you can wait slightly a bit more after the grab and the opponent will stay on the ground rather than spin out.

COMBOS
Thors hits causes a lot of hit stun decay and his attacks are too slow to catch up with it so he needs assist to truly extend is combos. This is to balance out his damage output which is very high. In most cases, he can take out a fair number of the cast on his own being able to do over 700k damage alone with one meter and no X-Factor. Adding assist and DHC's to the mix makes Thor on point a force to be reckoned with.

ADVICE, TIPS, & STRATAGIES

Magneto: Thor Stole My Tri-Dash!
Although Thor's mobility is slow, he can be sped up by utilizing and abusing Thor's air mobility. Triangle Dashing (Tri-Dashing) into :attack-light: is a great mid-screen, corner pressure technique to get in and open up an opponent. You can fient a dashing :attack-light: early if your opponent has a habit of standing to block everytime your in the air and start your real combo on the ground.

Dosey Doe Dashing!
Square Dashing :attack-hard: ( Super Jump into Air Dash and :attack-hard: ) is suprisingly fast and is a good way to get in when dealign with zoning characters.

The Mighty Escape!
Tri-Dashing Back and :attack-light: is also a good way to escape bad situations if you need to space yourself from your opponent when the situation changes.

Assist Me!!!
Use Assist to cover Thor's slow recoverying attacks either before starting your assult or after your last blocked attack. You can also use assist to extend your combos. Multi hitting assist like Hsien Ko's Senpu Bu for example are not effected by Advancing Guard allowing Thor to stay on the offensive or begin his mix ups.

Wheres Yo Curly Mustach at!?
Although Thors Mighty Spark has some disadvantages you can abuse Mighty Spark :attack-light: in rapid succession to annoy your opponent and coax them to move. It can stuff many Assist jump ins that are intended to cover opponents on the offensive and it can stuff many characters special attacks and hypers without an invincible start up; so long as you started the initial shot. If that does'nt work, youc an cancel occassional Mighty Spark H into Mighty Speech to build some meter. A great turtle tactic, just be c not to abuse it.

Are you Threatening Me?
Always Threaten with Mighty Hurricane/Mighty Punish when you have conditioned your opponent to start blocking a lot. The fact that you can combo out of it with ease makes you twice as threatening. Resets out of long combos is another great opportunity to extend your damage and build meter. You can usually set up for a reset after ending combos with Mighty Smash :attack-hard: or when Thor's combo Hit Stun Decay resets your opponent in midair. The possibilities are limitless.

Mighty Glitch!
If Thor is your second character and not your point, if you have a character that can put your opponent in a "capture state" (Whe your opponent twirls in the air. You can DHC to Thor's Mighty Punish which will wiff and recover. Depending on the Capture State set up, Thor whould have enough time to continue the combo. If he succeeds the h

We don't need no stinking DHC!
IF you set up your Mighty Tornado hyper to hit your opponent at the very tip of the top and edge of the Tornado, the last hit which would normally knock down your opponent will miss causing a very long hitstun and your opponent will continue to fall down very slow to the ground. This allows Thor to combo into himself outside of Mighty Tornado.

CHARACTER MATCH UPS

Know Thyne Enemey! Because Thor has a ton of bad match ups it's very important to know as many characters in MvC3 as possible. Unlike other characters that can go on autopilot until they open up, Thor has to actually think, and figure out the best approach to each character. The same tactic will not work from one character to another. You are encouraged to learn each characters stengths and weaknesses to give Thor the advantage he needs to compete.

MARVEL

Captain America
Spoiler: show
Captain America is primarily a midrange zoning master. His Shield Slash projectiles hit both in front and in the back as it passes by his opponent. Cap can freely move on the shields return to cover his assault allowing him to move around the stage without much fear of retaliation. If the shield hits you on its return, it’s basically free damage for him as he will have enough time to dash in and start his combo.

Anti-Zone tactics.
Thor will have a tough time getting inside on Cap’s shield Slash attacks, and aided with assist; he can be a moving wall. If you have an assist like Sentinels Drones, you can move freely a bit, but if your team doesn’t have an answer to his shield spams, you have some options.

Cap’s Shield cannot go full screen. Because of this, Cap has to jump forward or dash forward before throwing the shield if he hopes to hit you at all. During his recovery frames he is vulnerable for quite some time. It also takes a few frames before he releases the shield on start up. Thor can use this handicap to his advantage.
You can pick apart Captain America by Tri dashing back and pressing C to recover just as he moves forward, then retaliate by shoot a Mighty Spark L when you land. If he throws the shield, you will be completely out of range and depending on the distance of where his shield is you will hit Captain America, nullify his shield, or hit any assist in your path. Simply repeat this (with caution since his Hyper Charging Star can reach you in a hurry before you recover). And you will wittle him down forcing him to take more risk to get at you.

Trish
Spoiler: show
Trish has many attacks that keep her safe on block so she can continue the pressure when on the offensive in hopes you drop your guard or block incorrectly. Basically, Trish is MvC 101. In addition to her pressure game she has a nasty keep away that can pick off at her opponents health. Her peekaboo Traps limits your offensive strategy and forces you to play her game and this can be quite frustrating.

Luckily Thor has some answers to this.

Against Dive Kick Pressure

Trish will most likely feel confident in pressuring Thor since he is not fast enough to counter Trish head on. You will need to utilize your Tri-Dash back (Tri-Dash back + L) to escape pressure keeping the distance between you and her while you pick her apart with well-timed Mighty Spark shots. Just be wary of being predictable or you will most likely eat a hyper.
If you find yourself in the corner you need only worry about her Box Jump S which will hit crouching but you can block her dive kicks while crouching. She may use assist to keep you from pushing her back, just be patient and find the right time to push her back and try to escape the corner with a super jump. If you have an assist with invincible frames or high priority on startup, use it to punish her pressure game when it starts going into “flowchart mode”. Also make sure the pushblock her dive kicks and overheads to give you space to escape the corner.

Against Peekaboo Traps
If Trish is using Peekaboo Traps to keep your Thor from attacking from the air, make a mental note of where she is laying her traps. When super jumping, you can hold block as you’re falling to set off the traps without getting caught. Or you can use Mighty Strike M to blast right through her traps. This will eliminate her defensive options and allow you to get inside and put pressure back on Trish.

Trish and Assist
Trish will benefit from Assist that stays on the screen a long time such as Doom Rockets or Sentinel Drones. Because Trish can stay in the air a long time, it can be difficult to defend against these assist and you can easily be crossed up. You will need to make hasty decisions when dealing with these types of assist. For example: Doom Rockets takes time to get to you but activating Mighty Thunder will not only neutralize the rockets it will hit Doom for massive unscaled damage. Just be wary of Trish and your recovery time and make sure it’s worth it.
If Trish has assist that have invincible frames like Haggar or Tron just sit back and pick her off with Mighty Spark and try to bait her into using Maximum Voltage or coax her to come to you. Don’t let yourself fall for these set ups when defending or on the offensive. As usual with these assist, snap back whenever possible.

Authors Notes:
The purpose of this guide is to allow for additional information to pour in as people start to open up Thor and his many possibilities, I am no expert but i've played Thor for quite sometime and understand his role probably more than most people do.

I personally and still to this day do not believe Thor is the worst character in the game (I do have one though), but rather a character that has not been explored in enough depth to make him viable. Many characters in MvC3 can go on autopilot and blow up almost any characther they go againts because all their normals are just too good and too safe. You can't play this kind of game with Thor due to his slow normals. Every move you make must be calculated and patience is required even in a fast paced game like MvC3.

I encourage Thor players who are serious about breaking open this character to explore every corner of his offense and defense. Seeing as how justin Wong actually won the Fight for Relief Tournament with a Thor team againts some really good players with some really nasty teams show's that Thor has great potential even though he still cast Thor as the worst character in the game. If you don't use Thor as a point he definantly works as an assist. I do feel he lacks a bit as an anchor unless it's one on one and you have X-Factor level 3.

I actually run a Taskmaster team, but after having wrote this guide I came to appreciate Thor and have made adjustments to my Thor team to help him compete better. I will update this forum as new information about Thor is found and I can't wait to see the great stuff people find with Thor.
