They're really good, but they're not necessary for the win. They just let you cover more bases and put your opponent into more difficult to handle situations where they have to block like OSing T.Hawk's J.HK safe jump with his U2 to catch backdashes and reversal DPs.

in my honest opinion option selects can make or break a game! implementing option selects in your game will make you a great player! back in the SSFIV I played one of the best ken's his name was JoobThebaboon and that guy would option select everything! he was good! :?

They're critical, everyone who's good uses them. But the only one I manage to incorporate regularly is the old crouching "throw", since I'm not that good. I have my hands full doing the moves I intend to do, let alone ones I don't.

Two possibilities are always better than one. That's how powerful they are.

Option selects are extremely powerful! I recommend everyone learns their characters option selects. Not just the block/tech throw option select. Here is an example of an option select I do against Bison as Rose. On Bison's knockdown, Rose jumps in and option selects Soul Spiral and cr. mp. So if Bison teleports on wake up, he'll eat a Soul Spiral from Rose. If Bison is hit/block by the jumping HP, Rose will do cr. mp next instead of Soul Spiral.

Notice the first 2 teleports are punished by OS Soul Spiral? That is an option select. I made sure on Bison's knockdown, he could not teleport away. I continue to fight Bison with this mind set to this very day.

They are very powerful. I suggest incorporating them into your gameplay. I sometime forget to use them but whenever I decide to start using them again my winning margin gets huge if you know what I mean ;D

To my knowledge, there are 5 types of option selects and they're all powerful. After learning them, I can't imagine myself playing without using them.

Tech throw OS. This almost everybody uses without knowing they're using OS.
Jumping OS. The one that Legacy showed.
Meaty OS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCTdBq8xuyA
Buffering OS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Vx48kvP ... be&t=9m17s at 9:17 if the link doesn't take you there on it's own.
Trade OS. ( Advanced ).

I think learning/using the first for is a must for every high level player. This drops down your chance of making a mistake by 50% if not more.

Option selects add a whole other level to this game, but its very easy to get around and punish ( on wakeup do a focus attack )

but this is where the whole other level comes in... if you hit your opponent on wakeup with an OS and it pays off, chances are especially against a good player next time you try to OS on wakeup he might do a focus to blow it up... but then you could OS with an armor breaking move etc so it adds alot to the mind game factor.
when i was a kid, i asked god every night for a new bike, then i realised god dont work that way... so i stole one and asked him to forgive me
